The ECN Wind Turbine Test Station Wieringermeer (EWTW) is a test location for wind turbines that comprises of six prototype turbines, five research N80 turbines and five large meteorological masts.

Instrumentation: 

MM3 is a lattice tower with a height of 108 meter. At 108m the wind speed and direction is measured with a sonic anemometer of brand Gill 3D Windmaster (1086M). The wind speed is measured at 80m (hub height) with 2 Risø cup anemometers on the booms at 120° and 240° on which also 2 Thies First Class wind vanes are mounted for wind direction measurements. At the 0° boom a Gill Windmaster sonic anemometer is mounted. Also measured at (around) 80m are the air pressure (Vaisala PTB210), the air temperature and the relative humidity (RHT sensor Vaisala HMP45A). The booms at 52m have the same setup as the booms at 80m, namely 2 Risø cup anemometers and 2 Thies First Class wind vanes on the booms at 120° and 240° and a Gill Windmaster sonic anemometer at the 0° boom (same brand as before). A Rense temperature difference sensor is mounted at 37m and 10m (temperature at 37m minus the temperature at 10m).

The turbine under consideration is Nordex N80. It is a 3-bladed, pitch controlled wind turbine with a rated power of 2.5MW and with a hub height and rotor diameter of 80m. Several load indicators are defined in a different frame of reference for which several measurements are combined. The tower bending will be measured at the mast base by four full bridges (T-gauges). The torsion at the tower top will be measured by one +45/-45 full bridge. On the main shaft, the bending and torque will be measured in the middle between the main bearing and the shrink disk. The bending will be measured using T shaped strain gauges in a full bridge configuration and the torque will be measured using +45/-45 shaped strain gauges in a full bridge configuration. The bending moments of the blades 1, 2 and 3 are measured by full bridges of parallel shaped strain gauges installed at each of the blade roots.
